This is my last post of the year, so let me first say Happy Christmas to you all, thank you for your support in 2024, and all the very best for 2025!
Part of my role is to offer advice to my clients, and so I’ve been thinking about some of the best bits of advice I’ve received from others. Here are a ten phrases and aphorisms that people have shared with me, and which have helped me get a better perspective at work. I hope that they can also help you in the year ahead:
- Life is about success, not perfection.
- Lift as you climb.
- Move three things a mile, not 100 things an inch.
- Never go to sleep on an argument.
- Unsolicited feedback is always given for the benefit of the giver, not the recipient.
- The best time to plant a tree is 30 years ago; the second-best time is now.
- Being willing is not enough – we must do.
- Behind every business objective is a personal objective.
- You can’t chase two hares.
- When you’re walking a tightrope, it’s not the first step that requires total commitment, it’s the second.
Happy Christmas!
Off The Record: Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen) by Baz Luhrmann
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it,
Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past,
From the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts,
And recycling it for more than it’s worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen!
By the way, I’ve now created a Spotify list of all the songs that have featured in Business Rocks to date, including this week’s track. It’s handily titled, Stuart’s Business Rocks Playlist. Please feel free to add it to your playlists library so that you can get some musical inspiration whenever you need it. Thanks for all your support and encouragement!
