This week’s focus: Developing strategy in business is like going to the gym – first you need to get there, second you need to spend enough time there to make a difference, and third you need to put in the right amount of effort. In many of the strategy sessions I run I find that the hardest part, as with the gym, is getting the executives to the meeting. Once they do arrive and, after I manage to curtail their use of smart phones, we are able to spend sufficient time and focus on the most important issues facing their business, they always finish the session with this sentence: “We should do this more often.”

A key job of the leader is to set direction for your organisation. But to make this happen you need to engage your team, devote the necessary time and focus on your big issues. Are you getting your leadership team to the strategy gym?

Off the record: Come As You Are by Nirvana

Come, as you are, as you were, as I want you to be

As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy

Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don’t be late

Take a rest, as a friend, as an old memory
