This week’s focus: Andre Villas-Boas was named as the new manager of Chelsea, the Premier League club, last week. Unusually, and like one of his predecessors, Jose Mourinho, Villas-Boas never played the game. Instead, again like Jose Mourinho, Sir Bobby Robson, the late English manager, first spotted his coaching and managerial talent.

Robson obviously had a knack for identifying, nurturing and mentoring great managers, regardless of their previous experience, as both Villas-Boas and Mourinho have already won honours at the highest level.

What are you doing to spot and nurture new talent, both inside and outside your organisation, and, like Sir Bobby, are you willing to focus on potential ahead of experience?

Off the record: What A Waste by Ian Dury & The Blockheads

I could be the driver in an articulated lorry, I could be a poet – I wouldn’t need to worry

I could be the teacher in a classroom of scholars, I could be the sergeant in a squadron full of wallahs

What a waste!
