istock_tinywaistIs that the pain outweighs the gain.

Change efforts fail because they do not deliver results quickly enough. Managers and executives become focused on the means, not the ends. Pain is inevitable in change, so you must engineer your work to ensure that delivery of meaningful improvements is both obvious and quick.

It’s like my new fitness regime. For the first time I’ve hired a personal trainer to improve my results and performance. It would be easy to focus on the pain – the feeling of nausea, the muscle ache – that accompanies each session, were it not for one thing. In a matter of a few weeks I have lost 6lbs and – this may be wishful thinking – I think that I am starting to see some muscle where love handles used to be.

What are you doing to accelerate and improve the results of your major change programmes?
