I have found that once my clients have developed a compelling new growth strategy for their business, they are keen to achieve it as quickly as possible. Like Superman, they want to achieve their objectives in a single bound!

Unfortunately, that’s not often the most effective – or the quickest – route to growth. In my book, The CEO’s Strategy Handbook, I have set out the chart shown, which demonstrates a ‘stepping-stone’ approach to growth.

Growing your business typically requires a combination of reaching new customers and acquiring new capabilties. The stepping-stone approach highlights that you can achieve both these aims through a series of smaller projects rather than a single transformation.
