For the past few months, I’ve been suffering with lower back pain. It’s stopping me from exercising and is, well, a real pain. So, a couple of weeks ago I went to see James, a personal trainer who had radically improved the back health of one of my clients.

James taught me a daily regime to lessen the pain and it’s already starting to deliver results. The regime involves stretches and exercises for my thighs, lats, glutes, abs and several other muscle groups that I can’t even pronounce, let alone spell.

In fact, just about the only muscles I’m not working on are those in my lower back!

Where you feel the pain is not necessarily where the problem lies. The pain is often simply a signal that a system isn’t working properly. As a result, if you want to remove the pain, you must review, fix and improve the wider system.

What chronic pain is hurting and debilitating your business? And what improvements could you deliver by working on the wider system, rather than just the point of pain itself?

Off The Record: Hurt by Johnny Cash

The song was originally written and recorded by the band, Nine Inch Nails, but Cash’s cover, recorded shortly before his death, is easily the definitive version.

I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

The only thing that’s real
