In a parallel life, I would have been an astrophysicist. At university, I was always envious of those students who were able to go to the observatory to study particular stars, constellations and other celestial bodies.

That said, my interest is fairly dormant. I enjoy looking at the night sky but am still hugely ignorant of it. So, it was with some triumph that, with the aid of a set of standard binoculars, I finally found Andromeda for the first time last week. In fact, observing it was something of a spiritual moment for me.

Andromeda is not a particularly bright object; it’s little more than a fuzzy patch of light, near to the Cassiopeia constellation. What’s incredible, though, is that Andromeda is not a star, but an entire galaxy of one trillion stars.

Many companies, too, see their products and services as individual stars when they could be creating their own mini-galaxies of interconnected and mutually reinforcing products, services and solutions.

For over 15 years, Apple has linked its products to services such as iTunes, Apple Music, Apple TV and, increasingly, its health apps. More recently, Sky and BT have combined their phone services with broadband and TV subscription offerings. And, in the past few weeks, The Times has launched Times Radio (which I’d recommend to you), which both feeds off and enhances the company’s daily newspaper.

What are the potential connections between your various products and services and how could you transform your star products into galaxies of customer solutions?
